Garage Door Will Not Go Up All The Way

Garage door will not go up all the way. From here lift the garage door by hand about 3 feet above the ground and then release the door and see were it lands. You may not have even noticed it before but the main garage door opener unit will be plugged into an electrical outlet that is located on the garage ceiling near the unit. If the door was working fine for years these didn t just magically go out of adjustment. It s important to get this switch at just the right distance from the motor so that the door is able to close all the way but the motor also knows to stop running.

Sometimes you ll notice that your garage door closes all the way and then immediately goes back up instead of staying in the closed position.

Do not ever adjust the opener travel limits. If your garage door is not balanced right it won t go up or down all the way. The limit adjusters control how far the garage door goes up and how far it goes down. First check the sensor lights.

This issue usually arises with brand new garage doors that were just installed or older models that may need to be reset. Try making small adjustments. Start by making sure your garage door is open all the way. Locate the limit adjusters.

This is related to the up limit switch. Though this problem should be obvious it shouldn t be overlooked. Disengage the garage door. On the main console the box that hangs from the ceiling you ll see a few different nobs and or buttons.

If there s something blocking the door from closing all the way a full close will be impossible. Clutter or obstructions that block the sensor are the first problems to look for if your door won t close or in extreme cases open at all. If everything else is ok try operating the door by hand don t hurt yourself it should come up without too much trouble. There is one on each side of the door.

If the door goes up but you can t make it go down you probably need to adjust the sensors. Garage doors also have a force setting that dictates how much pull the opener uses to raise the door. You should now be able to move the door up and down by hand. The garage door limit settings isn t set properly.

If the door will not close all the way do the opposite and turn the screws counterclockwise or down. T his is a pretty uncommon problem but one that can happen after you ve first installed your garage door opener. One or more of these reasons is likely responsible for your garage door closing partially but not all the way. Using a ladder to reach the unit unplug the cord from the outlet.
